Carlos Camarena needs no introduction to those familiar with fine Tequila, but for those of you who are still getting your feet wet: he's the man behind a number of outstanding brands on today's market; those bearing the NOM number 1474 on the side label. His father first founded La Alteña in 1937. While most distilleries have opted for modern efficiencies and mechanical shredders, in the case of El Tesoro, the agave is still cooked in traditional ovens, 100% tahona crushed, fermented in open wooden vats, and double distilled to proof so nothing is ever watered down. We are occasionally given the chance to select from the finest reposado barrels the distillery has to offer. Carlos Camarena selects his best barrels and then we choose our favorite from the bunch. Prized for their agave flavor, these rested tequilas showcase less wood and more sweet agave than other brands which focus on wood influence to cover up a lack of flavor in the spirit itself. Barrel #B64 is a prime example of the delicate influence El Tesoro is known for in their aging.

Even just popping the cork the aroma launches out of the bottle. Fresh sweet apples, cracked black pepper, cooked agave along with a host of tropical fruits ranging from mango and pineapple to lychees and papaya. And all that sweetness is balanced by a hint of fresh cut grass and salty earth. That's all before you even get close to tasting the tequila. The subtle barrel notes lay underneath all that fruit providing a foundation of baking spices and a glazing of vanilla. Once you actually taste it, you're wrapped in a very soft palate. The sweet fruit tones hide any hint of alcohol on the midpalate. The finish is robust with a zingy pepper pop that is perfectly balanced by the 40.4% ABV. The barrel notes really shine on the finish - it's been rested just long enough for them to enhance everything about the agave, but not overpower anything. A sublime barrel of reposado from one of the very best tequila brands in Mexico.
