Gaja's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is the more potent of the Brunellos. It displays a darker color along with notes of tar, smoke, spices, toasted oak and dark fruit on a full-bodied frame with terrific expansiveness and length on the palate. A lingering note of licorice frames the finish of this beautiful, deeply expressive Brunello. (AG)

Sugarille is one of two single-vineyard wines produced by Angelo Gaja at Pieve Santa Restituta, the Montalcino estate he acquired in 1994. The vines here are planted in calcareous clay soils and, in 2001, they yielded a wine with deep concentration of flavor. Initial scents of crushed black pepper and dried cherries evolve over time into dark, savory fruit with a powerfully ferrous edge that frames the wine's rich midpalate. It feels altogether sleek and complex, with a length of flavor that's propelled from the core into a stony finish that lasts.

A gorgeous single-vineyard Brunello from Angelo Gaja's Tuscan estate, this wine is slightly more round and fleshy than Rennina but equally as complex and elegant. This is truly a great wine with velvet-like smoothness on the palate and intense black fruit and balsam aromas. It's pensive yet yielding, refined and powerful all at once. *Cellar Selection*
