David Schildknecht writes: "On a high, windswept granitic plateau near Monte Grossu (east of Calvi) known as E Prove, Michel Raoust vinifies in the vast former olive processing facility that father-in-law Roger Maestracci converted into a winery when he planted vineyards immediately after World War II. The facility permits the reds extended elevage, including time in large oaken foudres. Extreme diurnal temperature variation along with the influence of wind seems – as with many wines grown in places that share those traits – to favor pronounced phenolics and sprightly acid retention. I don’t know how it is that Raoust manages to offer some of the best wines I’ve tasted from Corsica at such low prices, but we can all be grateful for these amazing values, and there is no better place for any as yet uninitiated wine lovers to begin their tour of the l’Ile de Beaute."
