The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cras 1er Cru comes from 0.38 hectares of vine. It offers light, slightly tertiary red berry fruit on the nose, cut from a similar cloth to some of Lamarche’s Vosne-Romanées, so that I would have liked a little more appellation character to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with bright red berry fruit laced with soy and orange peel. It builds nicely in the mouth toward a vivid, slightly meaty finish and quite a long aftertaste. Fine, although I hope the aromatics find a louder voice once in bottle. (NM)
There is a wild character to the cool red berry aromas that are cut with spice, forest floor and plenty of floral whiffs. The sleek and equally cool medium weight flavors brim with minerality before culminating in a tautly muscular and well-detailed finish that exhibits a touch of dryness that doesn't appear to be fatal though it does compromise the length somewhat, at least today.
