Tasting Notes

Henri Le Roy is a first generation winemaker who began his original career as a biologist in Paris. But after falling in love with Burgundy, he found that he did not possess Burgundy money — so he decided to look further east, to the Jura, where he saw similar potential, but a little more affordable lands to begin his second career in wine. His first vintage was 2005, and he has continued to evolve and grow as a winemaker for the past decade-plus. Henri prefers to make ouille-styled wines (topped off barrels), as opposed to the traditional oxidative, or biological-styled wines, for his whites. For his reds, he prefers the indigenous grapes Poulsard and Trousseau for the classic profiles. The Trousseau is made from sourced fruit and is a bright, light-bodied style that captures the flavor and tradition of this unique red grape.

    I haven't had any Trousseaus that make me stop in my tracks quite like this one did. Its stunning bouquet walks the line between rich & earthy and bright & fruity. Upon first sniff, an alluring blend of blood orange, clove & nutmeg, toasted orange rind, cola, and stewed cherries is so prepossessing that I am almost encouraged to keep sniffing and skip the tasting step altogether. However a flavor profile of cola spice, blackberry jam, plum, and Juicy Fruit brand gum makes me happy I continued. I hadn't considered chilling the wine until reading Keith's review, but I agree that this would be a lovely red to chill for the warmer months. It will hold up well to dinner tables, but can also be enjoyed on its own due to its light body and almost-effervescent acidity.

    This little Trousseau beauty from winemaker Henri Le Roy hits all the right marks for a classic wine of the region. It has such a light color, you might think it treads into rose territory (both Trousseau and Poulsard are light colored reds historically) but it is packed with flavor. Bright red cherry fruit, touch of dusty herbs, some savory spices, this is the perfect light bodied red to cut through foods twice its size. Put a light chill on this and you will find yourself just as entranced by how versatile this wine can be.
