Tasting Notes

A blend of 50% Cinsault, 25% Syrah, and 25% Grenache. According to the importer, "Domaine de Fondrèche estate is situated at the foot of Mont Ventoux, the famous mountain in the Vaucluse department of the South of France, and covers a surface area of 38 hectares. For over twenty years the vineyard has been tended using natural methods to create a harmony between the vines, the earth, and the surrounding environment, and to produce wines that reflect the local terroir. The yield of each varietal is reasoned, no chemical weed killers are used, and the earth is worked mechanically to strengthen the natural defenses of the vines, encouraging the roots to burrow deeper and thereby protecting the vines from bad weather. Fondrècheis a unique place, with a special terroir and climate due to the influence of Mont Ventoux which brings currents of cold air and leads to big differences in temperature between day and night."

Recently, I lamented the reality that because of the shutdown, almost six months had passed since I’d tasted one of my favorite San Francisco dishes: a rich, steaming bowl of crab cioppino. Fortunately, Sotto Mare, my go-to cioppino and seafood spot in North Beach, just reopened. Without delay I placed an order for curbside pickup, drove home with the effusively perfumed fruits de mer enveloping my little Honda Fit, and soon dove right in. But not before opening the perfect bottle of rosé to complement this colorful maritime feast. This is a brilliant rendition of Grenache and Cinsault that flaunts delightfully crisp red fruits and has a wonderful mineral, saline expression on the pure, crystal-clean finish. Hard to believe, but the cioppino had finally met its match!

New vintage! This rose is so damn good. Too good - I can easily consume the entire bottle myself. It's succulent and salty, oozing with fresh red berries and the ever-important super energetic acidity. This is dry and delicious and I just can't get enough. If there's one french rose to stock up on this year it's this one.
