This opens with lively aromas of cherry, chocolate, limestone and spice. The body is fresh, supple and filled with ripe but subtle red fruits that lead to a finish of cocoa powder and fine talc. Delicious and ready to drink tonight. This vineyard in the southern part of the Médoc is so close to Bordeaux city that only a small part has been saved from buildings.

This is the first time I seen this hard to find wine, from a tiny vineyard only 12 miles from downtown Bordeaux. It was once part of Château Duthil, but now this 10-acre property is owned and managed by Jean-Pierre Cantelaube. Jean-Pierre has done a complete renovation of its cellars and changed the name back to its original “Bellegrave du Poujeau”.The gravelly terroir surrounded by a pine forest has an ideal microclimate that particularly favors Cabernet Sauvignon. A powerful nose of sweet cassis, blueberries, chocolate and incense, that’s reflected in its elegant palate.Indeed one of the top Cabernet Sauvignon I’ve tried this year, for a price that it’s easily half of the cost of what one might expect of a wine of this quality.

Fresh and lively, this is an exceptional value for classic and friendly Bordeaux. Right upon opening you get the rich, red fruit and spice notes you’d expect; but with a bit of air the more focused, herbal, tobacco tones gain ground on the fruit, balancing the palate wonderfully. Medium bodied with kind tannins for a young wine, this is a very drinkable bottle now but has the acid profile and unwound core to develop for a couple of years. Very solid addition to our portfolio.

Every Bordeaux that I have had from the 2016 has been very good and drinkable. The Bellegrave du Poujeau is no exception. It is classic with soft fruit but a nice crisp back bone and a hint of earth. It is ready to enjoy now and should please lovers of Bordeaux. It had been open about one hour before I tasted it.
