‘La Flamenca, in DO Alella, is a project close to the heart of winemaker Mario Rovier. He was born and raised in Barcelona and now spends his time between his birth city and the town of Ponferrada in DO Bierzo where he makes his Akilia wines. The ‘La Flamenca’ is a side project that allows Mario to explore the vineyards surrounding his hometown of Barcelona. He and his wife Maria organically farm three small plots of vines located in the Serralada de Marina natural park, named for the mountain chain belonging to the Catalonian coastal range.
DO Alella is Spain’s smallest Denominación de Origen. The DO takes its name from the town of Marseme Alella, a small suburb along the coast, just north of Barcelona. Here the vineyards intermingle with the town’s homes and city center and the vines roll down small hillsides, overlooking the sea and soaking in the Mediteranean sun. The ‘La Flamenca’ is composed of 35 year old Pansa Blanca (Xarel-lo) and Macabeu grown on sandy granite soils. Notes of pear, honeydew, cucumber and mint combine with pretty white floral notes and a hint of beeswax to complete this nuanced white wine.
