The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru reveals a lovely bouquet of rose petals, wild berries, exotic spices and rich soil tones. This is followed by a full-bodied, deep and multidimensional palate that's concentrated and serious, built around exquisitely refined but abundant tannins, concluding with a long and expansive finish. Charles van Canneyt thinks that the longevity of the best 2018s will surprise us in the future, and I suspect he may have a point when it comes to this effortlessly concentrated, complex Grand Cru. Aged in 45% new barrels, it's engagingly sweet, nuanced and juicy with velvety tannins, refreshing acidity for the vintage and a long, nuanced finish. Hard to keep your hands off it young, but give it time in bottle. Drinking Window 2023 - 2032. (TA)
The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak like all the domaine’s grand crus, has a tightly wound bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and touches of bergamot tea and briar. Lovely definition, but bashful at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a smooth texture. There is not enormous depth of grip to this RSV, though it has a spring in its step on the persistent finish. (NM)
The 2018 Romanée-St.-Vivant was one of the very last wines in the Hudelot cellars to finish its malo, and so this wine may have even more in store down the road than met the eye at the time of my visit the first week in November. The bouquet is ripe and black fruity in personality today, offering up scents of black raspberries, cassis, espresso, pigeon, dark soil tones, spicy oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite mineral in profile, with rock solid core of fruit, fine-grained tannins, tangy acids and a long, primary and well-balanced finish. This wine is lagging behind many of the others in the cellar today and it may well end up even better than I forecast. 94+
This is very ripe with notes of mocha and port on the liqueur-like aromas of cassis, spice and discreet floral nuances. There is better freshness to the super-sleek, intense and refined middle weight flavors that retain good detail while also flashing impressive power on the sappy and acidulated bon bons finish. This is one of those atypical 2018s that is riper than I personally prefer.
