Aromas of red berries, potpourri and rich soil tones introduce the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges Village, a medium to full-bodied, deep and succulent wine that's elegantly fleshy and enveloping, framed by an ample chassis of ripe, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, sapid finish. As I wrote last year, the thoughtful, intelligent and increasingly self-assured Charles Lachaux seems to gain in authority each time I taste with him, and my most recent visit prompted the same reflection. As readers will know by now, in the cuverie, wines that were once heavily extracted and lavishly oaked are now gently macerated, with significant percentages of whole clusters, and matured in mostly used barrels. In the vineyard, the evolution has been just as dramatic. The vines' canopies are now rolled, emulating the practice of Domaine Leroy, and a new parcel in Aux Reignots has been planted at a density of fully 20,000 vines per hectare. That's hugely labor-intensive, yet it appears to be paying off, as Lachaux is able to achieve a concentration in the vineyard that permits the most gentle of extraction in the cuverie. (WK)
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Village has a very pure bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and hints of blue fruit; pressed violets emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite firm, offering a mixture of red and black fruits laced with truffle and cedar toward the finish. Very fine. (NM)
The wine is a blend of various small parcels that lie north of the village. The fairly light colour is deceptive, as the nose is infused with juicy raspberry fruit that's ample and upfront. Concentrated but fluid, it nonetheless has good weight of fruit and moderate tannins. Lifted by attractive acidity, it is relatively forward but has persistence of flavour. My guess is that it will age prettily over the medium term. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030. (SB)
A discreet but not invisible application of wood can be found on the fresh mix of red and dark pinot fruit, earth, spice and overt floral nuances. This is not especially dense but I like the energy of the middle weight flavors that possess a highly attractive texture, all wrapped in a firm, nicely complex and only mildly rustic finale.
