This is aromatically riper than its 2017 counterpart with a whisper of the exotic to the white and yellow orchard fruit that includes a hint of passion fruit. There is both good volume and richness to the attractively textured flavors that deliver good length though not necessarily excellent complexity. However, the underlying material appears to be present such that it could develop more depth in time.
The 2018 Puligny villages from Monsieur Carillon is a ripe, but fresh and zesty example of the vintage. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a pretty blend of peach, lemon, chalky soil tones, spring flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, ripe and succulent at the core, with good soil signature, bright acids and lovely focus and grip on the very attractive finish. Good juice. 2020-2040+.
Aromas of pear, white flowers and ripe citrus fruit mingle with notions of freshly baked bread, introducing Carillon's 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's satiny, expressive and quite fruit-driven this year. Jacques Carillon began his harvest on August 25th, and he has produced a very charming range of wines. The 2018 vintage at this address is somewhat reminiscent of the Carillon 2015s—with a touch less density and concentration—and it is likely to drink well out of the gates. The domaine's 2017s, tasted from bottle, were showing very well, demonstrating more depth and structural tension, and even though 2017 also displays plenty of upfront appeal, it will be the longer-haul proposition of the two. As I wrote last year, the Carillons have deep roots in Puligny-Montrachet, dating back to at least 1520, and intermarried with the Virot family—the late François Virot being the régisseur of Domaine Leflaive in its glory days. Brothers Jacques and François worked together with their father, Louis, but parted ways after the 2009 vintage, ending the Louis Carillon label and inaugurating domaines of their own. (WK)
Cask sample. Beguiling nose which has both a herbal note and powerful ripe apple fruit. Textured and packed full of acidity, vibrant and lively and a long finish. 17/20 points. (AC)
The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes from seven lieux-dits from around the appellation. It has an attractive bouquet of apple blossom, orange zest and light crustacean aromas. The palate is quite saline on the entry with a fine bead of acidity and good weight in the mouth, but just a little smudged on the finish.
