K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "A 50/50 blend of two of the most pristine mountain sites of Monterey County, the Pelio and Coastview vineyards. With ocean views and an average elevation of 1,700 ft, Montañita de Oro presents a perfect combination of feminine lift and masculine structure. Pelio Vineyard is located next to Albatross Ridge, northwest of the Carmel Valley appellation of Monterey. At 1,000 feet and six miles from Monterey Bay, this site is truly on the edge of viticulture. Clay loam is littered with diatomaceous shale, evidence this area was under the sea until about 12 million years ago. Coastview Vineyard is located on a ridge top 2,300 feet up the Gabilan Mountains, Coastview is one of the most dramatic sites on the Central Coast. Thin soils of decomposed granite and limestone are planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Grenache. Organically farmed. The 2018 "Montañita de Oro is medium garnet color and medium bodied in weight. Wild strawberry, dried herbs and flowers, and green peppercorn on the nose are followed by tart cherry and cinnamon on the palate. 50% whole cluster, native primary and secondary fermentation . 10 months élévage in 25% new French oak barrels. Eight barrels - 191 cases produced. Bottled unfiltered."

The Mantanita de Oro Pinot Noir is a complex and intriguing bottle of wine. It beautifully captures the haunting qualities that make this fickle variety so alluring, captivating yet often so elusive. Made in a style reminiscent of Burgundy, embracing elegance, bright fruit and savory qualities; this wine is also very clearly influenced by it's coastal mountain terroir. The wine has an effortless concentration and power without being highly extracted or overly ripe (13% ABV). The finish of the wine is inflected by a saline minerality and fresh, cool-climate acidity. At first the wine is quite focused with lots of forest floor notes, dried spices, warm stones. As it sits in the glass more effusive floral notes emerge, rose petals and violets quickly followed by soft red fruits, raspberry puree, rose hip and bramble. Though this unfiltered wine is ever so slightly turbid in the glass, the purity on the palate is spectacular, with silky tannin, balanced acidity and beautiful persistence. Wow! A winery direct deal allows us offer this wine at a price, that quite frankly, belies it's world-class quality...but we're excited to get this bottle into the hands of as many customers as possible and introduce many of you to the special wines of Sam Smith.
