The 2018 la Chapelle is one of the ripest wines in the Lafouge cellars this year, coming in at all of 13.4 percent octane. The wine is just stellar on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a classic mix of red and black cherries, raw cocoa, gamebird, plums, a complex base of soil tones and just a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully sappy at the core, with fine focus and grip, impeccable balance, fine-grained tannins and outstanding backend mineral drive on the long and complex finish. This is stellar Auxey in the making! 93+
A slightly riper but still attractively fresh nose speaks of plum, dark cherry and cool earth scents. There is better mid-palate density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that flash good minerality on the serious and firm but not really austere finish. This is worth checking out.
Aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries and plums introduce Lafouge's 2018 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle, a medium to full-bodied wine that's a touch firmer and more youthfully austere than it typically is. In 2018, the La Chapelle actually seems more overly structured than Les Duresses, though the opposite is generally the case. (WK) 90+
