From selling grapes to crafting some of his region's most reliable and noteworthy wines, Jeff Wilkes saw it all in Santa Barbara and brought his unique experience to the J Wilkes label. "After a long and rewarding career as a salesman, grape grower and ambassador for Santa Maria and Paso Robles wine, Jeff Wilkes decided to try his hand at winemaking. He went to his long time employer and friend, Steve Miller, with a proposal to create wines that focused on California’s Central Coast, through the lens of two of its sub-AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas) – Santa Maria and Paso Robles Highlands. Jeff launched his ‘J.Wilkes’ label in 2001, focusing on Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, and made his last wine in 2010 before his untimely passing late in that same year."

What I have loved about J. Wilkes wines over the years is how they showcase the fresh and vibrant side of Paso Robles that is sometimes forgotten when people think of the region. The 'Highlands District' Cabernet Sauvignon is a perfect cab to enjoy now with its fresh, juicy dark fruits, touches of fresh herbs, and hints of purple flowers, while still delivering that silky smooth texture a cab lover seeks out. This wine will easily become one of my patio sippers while grilling on these warm summer nights, and at a great price to keep stocked on hand at home.

I've been a big fan of winemaker Wes Hagen ever since his days crafting brilliant Pinot Noir at Clos Pepe. Now he's deploying his skills at J. Wilkes, the sister winery to the Bien Nacido Estate. I liked this wine at the original $30 but I'm loving it even more at $20! Paso Robles has turned into a reliable source for fresh and juicy Cabernet Sauvignon built for early drinking. For the price, the wine is remarkably polished with classic hints of blackberry, cassis, plum, with a touch of oak. It's velvety smooth on the palate and simply a joy to drink. I dare say you could even put a light chill on this and make it your "house" Cab when grilling up trip-tip and barbecue. It's a remarkably versatile Cabernet Sauvignon with just a dollop (5%) of Lagrein.
