Fourchaume, like Montée de Tonnerre, faces west, and is one of the warmest premiers crus in Chablis. There is iron as well as limestone in the soil, which gives the wine unusual grip. The nose is reserved, even stern, and nutty rather than fruity, but that in itself is typical of fine Chablis. The palate is rich and sumptuous, very ripe and concentrated, with force and energy. It's also very mineral and spicy, with an almost saline character as well as considerable power and extract. Very long. Drinking Window 2019 - 2030. (SB)
Aromas and flavors of apple, melon and stone mark this plump white. Harmonious and vibrant, with a mouthwatering impression on the mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2020.
The 2015 Chablis 1er Cru les Fourchaumes Vieilles Vignes, one of the final vineyards to be picked because of the thickness of the skins, has attractive scents of quince, orange blossom, flint and just a light petrol scent. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, slightly creamy in the mouth with a palpable sense of energy and flecks of almond and white chocolate sprinkled judiciously over the finish. This is a well crafted Fourchaume that may merit a higher score down the line. (NM)
Sweet notes of apple and apricot show the ripeness of this 2015, but it cleans up in a brisk finish, potently structured and needing several years of bottle age to integrate.
