I have now tasted the '99 GE some seven times since my original review in Issue 5 and it continues to improve, indeed to the point that I have raised my score modestly. There is still a touch of new oak framing the penetrating red and blackberry fruits, vanilla and oriental spice aromas and it continues onto the beautifully detailed and quite robust flavors that deliver excellent precision. This is a big wine with richness, superb length and impressive refinement and it's clear that this will live for decades. In sum, this is very classy juice.
A dark, brooding wine, the 1999 Grands-Échézeaux is simply sensational. Firm tannins provide the backbone in an intensely perfumed, savory Burgundy loaded with class and nuance. Smoke, tar, leather and herbs open up in a mysterious, intensely perfumed Burgundy that has so much still to say. The broad, textured finish makes it impossible to resist a second taste, and then a third. I expect the 1999 will drink well for another 20 years, perhaps longer. This is a fabulous showing for the Grands-Échézeaux. (AG)
The 1999 DRC Echézeaux is a very young and unevolved example of the vintage, but this will be a lovely example of this bottling in the fullness of time. The deep and primary nose wafts from the glass in a mix of black cherries, raspberries, venison, coffee, chocolate, herb tones and toasty new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and still quite primary in personality, with a plump core of fruit, lovely soil signature waiting in the wines to unfold, ripe, beautifully integrated tannins and a long, tangy finish that closes with excellent length and grip. This is a puppy, but will be an excellent vintage of DRC Echézeaux in the fullness of time. (Drink between 2025-2075) 93+
I was intrigued to see how the 1999 Echezeaux would be performing at 14 years of age since I have not tasted it since just after bottling. It has a very classy nose of dark cherry fruit, quite exotic for one of Aubert de Villaine’s wines, with hints of blood orange and even peach skin infusing the opulent aromatic profile. The palate is well-balanced and tightly knit, though it is clear that the RSV 1999 alongside was born with a higher level of delineation and clarity. Still, you have to admire the brio and hubris of this Echezeaux, and its youthful zeal suggests it will age over three decades without too much sweat. Delicious. Drink 2015-2030. (NM)
Saturated ruby-red. Highly nuanced nose combines raspberry, redcurrant, plum, violet, rose petal, pepper, oak spice and tobacco. Sweet, fat, round and spicy, but with lovely vinosity. Quite backward after the Echezeaux. A wine with impressive density and verve, long and subtle on the back end. 92+
