The 2016 Zinfandel Blocks 7 & 22 was aged for 15 months in French oak, 33% new. Pale to medium garnet-purple colored, it dances out of the glass with spicy notions of cloves, fenugreek, star anise and cumin seed with a core of raspberry preserves, stewed plums and blueberry compote plus wafts of tobacco, fallen leaves and fragrant soil. The palate is full-bodied with loads of juicy red and black fruit preserves flavors and a chewy texture, finishing with loads of freshness and a spicy kick. (LPB)
Aromas of white pepper and lavender lead to a robust, meaty palate. Blackberry, graphite and oak round out the balanced, powerful foundation that's supported by firm tannins. (VB)
The least youthfully rigid of the Hendry bunch under review this month but still a structured wine with a marked bent to firmness, the 2016 bottling from Blocks 7 & 22 is dense and fairly tight at one and the same time. Though not bound up in tannins, it nonetheless begs for time in the cellar to soften and expand on its fruity message, but age it will and it has good concentration on its side.
