K&L Notes

Like many great estates, Château Gigognan has a long and storied past. The roots of the vineyards date back to the time of the Romans. Bishop Geoffroy of Avignon even had a hand in the estate in the twelfth century. The property's modern history began when Anne and Jacques Callet purchased the Clos du Roi domaine and began restoring the château. All through the 1990s, the Callets worked to rebuild the property and create a better-equipped cellar. As of 2009, the winery has been certified organic. In 2012, Philippe Cambie came on board to consult with the winemaking and rework some of the vineyard plantings. Jacques Callet passed away in July of 2016, and the property was purchased by Jean-Francois Henin in 2017. A new era began, and even greater restoration has taken place. A whole new production facility has been added, and winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt now leads the charge to establish the winery as one of the most exciting in the region. The "Clos du Roi" is primarily one large parcel with just a few tiny satellite parcels. Planted over galets (the classic rolled stones), the terroir is located in the southern and driest part of the appellation. Composed of primarily Grenache and Syrah, it is aged in a mix of stainless and older wood. It is a pure and expressive version of Châteauneuf and a welcome addition to our Direct Import program.

I've had my eye on this property for a couple of years now, but my visit to this historic estate in 2019 clinched the deal. They always made solid wines from the region and even shifted to organic farming before it was fashionable. Several years ago, they brought on Philippe Cambie as a consultant, who elevated the fruit quality, but it wasn't until winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt came on board that the wines began to take on a more pristine yet elegant character. The 2016 (an outstanding vintage) is the crossover wine between these two regimes. This wine has the extraction and fruit intensity of the vintage and that Cambie flourish, but the seamless finish is what sends this wine from very good to great! Derenoncourt oversaw the final produc‚Äčt, and his palate gave the wine the polish and supple tannins that make it so appealing now. Roasted plum, sweet strawberry, candied figs, brushy herbs, and peppery notes are just a few of the aromas and flavors that erupt from the glass. This has years ahead of it, and at this price, a six pack or more is a must!

In addition to the tasting notes that are vividly described in the commendable critic scores, here are few more reasons why you should buy this wine: First, the price point is unbeatable. Many Chateauneuf du Pape wines start at the $50 range, but this clocks in at only $35. As the newest addition to our Direct Import program, this means you are buying stellar wine that has been personally sourced and curated by our buyer and awarded the stamp of approval by our passionate sales staff, for a price you won't find elsewhere. Second, this is magnificently approachable for a younger wine and you can cellar it for several years too. The fruit is rich and round and there is the distinct scent of garrigue that wafts from the glass. I love the long finish and how the tannins are present but not aggressively so. Third, it's the perfect wine to have with autumn and winter dinners, whether it's stew, roasted lamb, rich dishes with cheese and mushrooms or squash puree. As you stock your freezer with cool weather meals, be sure to stock your fridge with this wine. This is an undeniably delicious and balanced CdP.
