The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff, as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is home to more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically, and emphasizes the importance of the three soil types present on the estate. With her grapes growing on limestone, flint (or silex) and clay, Aurore is able to produce wines that have a real depth of character. The 2019 is another delightful vintage. The aromas jump out of the glass, with wet stone, grapefruit, gooseberry and Meyer lemon. On the palate the fruit is clean and soft with bright acidity and layers of mineral depth. It’s a beautiful wine any time of year, but we particularly enjoy it with the lovely autumn weather we see here in the Bay Area.
