  A blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache that saw roughly 20% stems and a year in 50% new, larger format oak, the 2017 Artemia has a Côte Brune-like perfume of dark fruits, smoked meats, black olives, and chocolate. Full-bodied, smoky, meaty, and powerful, it’s another rock star of a Syrah from the Chaudière family that has incredible character.

  A tank sample of the 2017 Ventoux Artemia looked promising, although a bit different in character from previous vintages. It's 75% Syrah and only 25% Grenache, with peppery, cool-climate Syrah notes, blueberryish fruit, ample weight and a clean, crisp, lively finish. One of the largest estates in the Ventoux, Château Pesquié is now completely organic, with the goal of being biodynamic in 2019. The Chaudière brothers, Alexandre and Frédéric, deserve great credit for building on their parents founding vision. (JC)

  Countless patrons over the years have enjoyed the Château Pesquié “Terrasses” red, so tasting this producer’s top tier of single vineyard, biodynamic wines proved a recent revelation. The Artemia is a silky blend of Syrah and Grenache grown on limestone gravels that lend notes of elegance and freshness reminiscent of wines from the northern Rhône—probably due to the cooling influence of Mont Ventoux. There’s a gentle nod toward Cornas in its velvety melange of black fruits, with hints of pepper, wildflowers, and a whiff of bacon on the long finish. Oh, it might be worth adding that “Artemia” translates as “good health.” Drink to that!

  The wines of Pesquie are so dynamic and enthralling! It has been great to watch the development of this property into a very serious producer of wines that are some of the best and most complex for their region(Ventoux). The 2017 Chateau Pesquie Artemia is the ying to the yang of the 2017 Chateau Pesquie Silica, whereas the Silica is Grenache-dominated the Artemia is Syrah-dominated. The 2017 Pesquie Artemia has a nose loaded with fresh cracked pepper notes as well as dried herbs and subtle black fruit aromas. The palate is a sexy jumble of blackberries, molten rock and mocha-laced notes with the subtle refinement one might see in a Cote Rotie. This is a fabulous wine and easily competes with wines double the price.
