The El Coto farms eight vineyards throughout all of Rioja. The "Coto de Imaz" line are source from sites that they have the the "Alta" subregion around the village of Cenicero. This historic village is famous for it's limestone rich soil. This is an intense and concentrated wine, 2012 was a drought vintage, but the clay rich sols and the proximity to the Ebro lessened its impact on the wine. This is a flagship wine. It is about presence, depth and complexity. It is definitely worthy of addition time in the cellar.

    El Coto holds a special place in my heart. It was a wine from this producer that found a lost, food obsessed, 20 something in Spain, and ignited the spark to start my journey in the wine industry. I have always felt a well made Rioja can be an ethereal experience for those who find it, and El Coto has a talent for crafting incredibly expressive, traditional wines from the area. This Grand Reserva is still so vibrant and youthful. It now shows, ripe cherries, dried cirtus peel, mocha powder, hints of coconut, dusty leather, sweet herbs with fine tannins that will continue to seamlessly integrate even further over the years. It is hard to not open and enjoy this now with a little air, but this will definitely cellar for a number of years to come. A fantastic value to add to your cellar.

    Despite its years aging in bottle, this wine presents an uncanny, youthful vitality indicative of strong cellaring potential. With an incredibly inviting nose of Valencia orange peel, bright cherry and sweet strawberry, it effortlessly commands your attention from the first pour. The remarkably structured palate shows all the dusty tannin and oak character of well-crafted Rioja along with an array of ripe fruits and some flavors that may be a bit less traditional. I could swear I got boysenberry and hibiscus on one pass, mocha and merguez on the next. With some air, it softens and broadens, yielding truly mouthwatering acid and backed up by savory earth and floral vanilla. For an exceptional wine it comes at an unbelievably low price, and I urge everyone to get theirs while supplies last. Very excited to see how this develops.

    Classic Tempranillo in a more modern style. Dark and concentrated with leather, plums and mulberries with some rich tannins that show there is plenty of youth left here. With some time open it shows a richly textured body, savory yet sweet fruited finsih with enough acid so that its never too heavy on the palate. This is a wine to drink now as well as lay down for many years of drinking pleasure.

    Gran Reserva wines are statement wines. They are made to impress. This is a Gran Reserva! The nose is incredibly evocative for me, of what I cannot pinpoint exactly, I have spent the last months devouring Brandon Sanderson Cosmere books. The fruit is a dark and concentrated mix of berries of all colors but there is a red and almost purplish tone to it. The oak beautifully accentuates the fruit. Layers of subtle and not so subtle spice and there is whiffs of earth and stone. It is exotic almost like from a fantasy novel. The concentration on the nose reveals itself and intensity on the palate. This wine is dense and powerful. The exotic spice and fruit from the nose is here on the palate coiled and ready. I get a sense that the acid, tannin and the oak are physically restraining the liquid of the wine. Keeping it focused and in check, I love that tension. This is a wine that needs decanting, let it wear itself out a little before dinner. Or put in the cellar this is a wine that will repay time and repeat readings/drinkings. For all of my flourishes this is not an opaque nor obtuse wine this is great Rioja perfect for any hearty feast or with a little cheese, cured meat and a good book.

    Dry blackberry and old leather and sage all climb out of the glass, hinting towards the stately palete that finds fennel and red fruit notes and dusty mocha notes near the mid and finishes with a long, plummy flourish. A bottle that's been allowed to grow up in the eight years between vinting and release, this is sophisticated juice that can complement a nice steak, but is enjoyable enough to disappear from the glass before anything is done cooking
