K&L Notes

Gigondas is a treasure trove of value in the Rhône, and Domaine de Bosquets is a perennial favorite. The Brechet family has a long history in the Rhône Valley, and they are behind some of the most successful estates today. Domaine de Bosquets has a long history as well, back to 1376, when the first vines were planted at a lieu dit by the name "Bosquets." Over the centuries the land passed through many hands, and in 1962 it was acquired by Sylvette Brechet’s father Gabriel Meffre (also a legend in the region). Today Sylvette’s son Julien has taken over the domaine and made it his own. Julien is a passionate young man, whose winemaking prowess has earned much praise in the Rhône Valley, and his wines speak of this talent. The "Reserve" is a blend of about 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Mourvèdre and Cinsault all from the very distinct terroirs that Julien has planted on his property. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and about 30% whole cluster and then aged for 12 months in a mix of French oak barrels of varying sizes and then rests an additional 6 months in concrete tanks. Domaine des Bosquets has become one of the quintessential wines in the region showing the classic garrigue and potpourri notes and the sexy fruit that Julien is famous for harvesting. Terrific in its youth and a worthy cellar candidate as well. *Organic Conversion/Biodynamic practices*

I am, at times, somewhat skeptical when I see the word "reserve" on a wine label, as I've often preferred the entry-level bottling from many winemakers. This very impressive Gigondas deserves the classification, as it offers world-class concentrated fruit, bold tannins, fine acidity, and exceptional overall balance. It's quite youthful and primary at the moment and could use some time in the cellar. Give it plenty of aeration if opened in the near future.

One of the most serious producers to emerge in Gigondas in the last decade has to be Julien Bréchet and his Domaine des Bosquets. Bréchet is nearly Gigondas royalty as his grandfather was Gabriel Meffre, one of the creators of the appellation and most highly regarded winemakers of his time. Some of these original holdings worked their way down the family tree via Bréchet's mother, and now under the stewardship of Julien, they have become some of the most intriguing and exciting wines in the whole of the Southern Rhône. I was fortunate enough to taste the 2018s out of barrel and tour the individual sites that make up his single-parcel wines plus the various components that make up the "Réserve." Each vineyard is planted to a specific variety like Grenache and Syrah or one particular old vine co-planting of Mourvèdre with bits of Grenache and Cinsault interspersed in the vineyard. Each site has its unique soil types and varying aspects that provide different exposure throughout the day to sunlight and protect or expose the vines to the Mistral winds that blow through the Rhône on a near daily basis. The "Réserve" is that sum-greater-than-its-parts blend, as good in its own way as the single vineyards. It is perfectly reflective of the appellation of Gigondas, as opposed to the more single terroir wines with their Burgundian approach to site selection. And the wine just oozes lusty red and black fruit, opening with raspberry coulis, blackberry jam, anise, bergamot tea, and that haunting garrigue so indicative of Gigondas. It is sumptuous with its weight and caressing tannins. This is seriously delicious Gigondas. A beauty that will evolve and open for years to come and will become even more Gigondas-like after a short wait in the cellar. But right now, you will find the purity and intensity that puts Julien Bréchet at the top of the list of winemakers in the Rhône.
