K&L Notes

92 points, Nick Butler in the Real Review: "A classic struck-match, reductive smokiness to this. Lemon essence and white peaches lend some aromatic charm. A classic, cool-climate expression - natural acidity carrying just-ripe fruit - oak, measured. Exceptional at this price." (03/2020)

Oakridge does not need much of an introduction. They are a top producer in the Yarra Valley, and a contender for the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers anywhere in the country. Winemaker David Bicknell is an Australian winemaking legend, and has been at the helm of Oakridge for two decades. His local-vineyard series wines seek out the best, most well-managed vineyards throughout the Yarra, and craft their wines transparently to highlight the differences across the Yarra, and reflect the individuality of each site. The Henk Vineyard Chardonnay is sourced from the north-facing Lusitana Park Vineyard, one of Australia’s greatest vineyards for Chardonnay, and is planted on red volcanic soils in the subclimate of Woori Yallock. Handpicked, whole-bunch pressed, and aged in French Oak puncheon, this is a perfect exposition of the finesse-meets-power style of Bicknell’s wines. The nose here is intensely aromatic, white peach dominates the aromas with green apple and hints saline character. On the palate, there’s flint, wet stones and a beautiful expression of lemon curd that persists and persists all the way through the finish. Yet for all of its intense flavor, the texture is like mineral water. Fresh, clean, and light on the palate. This wine is absolute fire. The penetrating acid, makes it excellent for food pairing, but I would drink a glass of this on its own any day of the week. Maybe one of the best examples to date of the ever-increasing quality of Australian Chardonnay.

A clean, crisp Chardonnay with enough weight to be serious but not an ounce more. Lemon and white ceder all over that classic flinty core. Hard to dislike and has a couple years on it, so lots of reason this could be a go-to house wine. The finish is long, fading evenly across the palate.

What a world we live in where Australia produces wine of this caliber? Had it not been for the slight guava and melon notes on the mid-palate you could have convinced me this was Burgundy, and at $25? This is a special bottle! The nose is so flinty I almost think there's a pirate nearby. Underneath that we have citrus, melon, and a slight popcorn note. Palate is where I fall in love, full of bright fruit, guava, and pineapple. Minerality is everything on the finish, and it's so clean that you have to come back for more! This is amazing now and in a couple years will be unbelievable!

Oakridge is known as one of the best producers in the Yarro Valley, and I have to say this Chardonnay does not disappoint. I love the crisp, citrus style chardonnays from the old world and this is one of those! Very crisp and enjoyable, not buttery at all, this medium bodied, easy to drink every day chard has mild accents of mineral and oak flavors that's easy to pair with seafood, vegetables, cheese and stews. It's also a great value wine with high rankings. I would buy a couple of these for any dinner parties.

The nose is bright and intense, with flinty smoke, melon, citrus and flowers. There is a lovely creamy lanolin edge on the texture which is rich and mouth coating, but finishes crisp with the long acid-driven finish. This is a great deal on single-vineyard Chardonnay from a site that continuously delivers!
