Veedercrest's Mount Veeder Cabernet is crafted from the famed "Pym-Rae" vineyard, now responsible for Alfred Tesseron's (Pontet-Canet) signature cult Napa Cabernet. Back in the day, Veedercrest was a staple producer of Napa Valley Cabernet and Chardonnay until the mid-1980s, even garnering plaudits from the eminent Steven Spurrier at the 1976 Judgement of Paris. The label ceased production in 1986 but was revived in the 2005 vintage with a series of dynamic wines of exceptional depth and power. The "Pym-Rae" vineyard is at the heart of this wine, a property that was long owned by Robin Williams and named after his children. It's a remote, steep, and unforgiving site, but Tesseron's acquisition only further cements the site's singular pedigree. The Veedercrest winemaking team makes full use of this impeccable fruit to craft uncompromising, bold, and distinctive wines from this singular terroir.

Tasted as a line up of of the '06 - '09 vintages, the 2007 is possibly the most dramatic, with a umami refinement that's either entirely of the years making or marks a change in winemaking from any other harvest. This juice has obvious West Coast weight, but a soft, mineral undertone through every aspect of the tasting that highlights the richer, fruit and herbal primary notes combining to a complexity that's wholly enjoyable.

2007 is well known as a highly celebrated year in Napa Valley that Robert Parker called the "vintage of the century". Personally, I have come across quite a few 2007 wines that had not aged as gracefully as I would have hoped. The hot vintage meant that some wines were explosive and impressive in their youth but declined quickly if the pH was too high or structure not sufficient. That is certainly NOT the case with this beauty from Veedercrest! Pym-Rae’s rugged mountainside location at 1500ft elevation never seems to have an issue providing enough structure and this wine has great balance. Dark, dusty red to black fruits, leather, lots of cigar box notes, toasted spices, warm earth. The tannins are ripe and fine, drinking beautifully but will likely continue to develop well for 5+ years and last until 2030 if you enjoy the complex flavors of mature Cabernet.
