Winemaker's Notes: "Alicante Bouschet is one of the very few red grape varietals that also has red juice; a so called teinturier grape. Therefore, it has often been used as a mixing grape to impart color to other red wines with weaker color. But it’s less commonly allowed to shine on its own. I named this wine after another full color character that inspired me. My slight extended maceration gives this wine a subtle old world roundness and structure, without ever overpowering the fruit. A complex wine with lots of layers of forest berries, some subtle herbal notes whilst still retaining a lightness in its step. It spent 15 months in neutral oak so as to not impart too much heavy-handedness, with just a touch of 15% new oak to round it off.
As always, naturally fermented, no filtering, no fining and with as little sulfites as I can get away with.
The Dutchman Vineyard is a sustainably farmed low-impact vineyard in San Joaquin County that’s farmed by Sam and Carla Travaille. It has produced award-winning Alicante Bouschet for multiple producers int the past, so I’m glad to get access to this fruit."
