K&L Notes

Winery notes: Santa Barbara wine legend Doug Margerum is the man behind Barden; which happens to be his middle name. At Barden, Doug produces limited quantity, boutique wines made from grapes solely sourced from the world-renowned Sta. Rita Hills. He carefully selects the vineyards with meticulous attention to detail in all factors influencing the ultimate quality of the wines, including pruning, soil, climate, and farming methods.

Earlier this year a few of us from the Hollywood store were visiting and tasting with Doug Margerum at his winery. After going thru the Margerum line-up he introduced us to his Barden wines which we had heard about but never tasted. Barden, which is Dougs middle name, is the label he uses for his Sta. Rita Hills focused wines. As a local legend and unofficial ambassador of the area, few people know their way around the Sta. Rita Hills better than Doug. Thanks to 30+ years of experience and long term relationships he's able to source some of the best vineyards in the valley. After spotting a stack of cases, we decided to make him an offer on the spot. Doug obliged us with a "take all" golden opportunity. Making great wine is one thing, selling it is another. The wine is lovely. It has the hallmark Sta. Rita Hills acidity, lift, and energy. It's bright and refreshing on the palate with notable salinity, savoriness, and minerality. It's simply mouthwatering. You also get a mouthful of green apple, citrus, and a garnish of tropical fruit. I can't believe how fortunate we were to stumble on this cache. Timing is everything.

Have you ever just had a chardonnay that once you open it and take your first sip, you think to yourself "That's a damn fine chardonnay." For under $30, Barden is that chardonnay. Delivering everything I want in a chard, and more, medium bodied, bright and zippy acidity. Summer may almost be over, but we still have indian summer around the corner, and this bottle of chardonnay will be perfect for those 90 degree days in October. Buy a couple bottles or maybe even a case, you won't regret it!

The Sta. Rita Hills area has quickly become a personal favorite region of mine for Chardonnay, and that feeling was quantified even more after visiting Doug Margerum earlier this year, and tasting through his line up of Barden wines. The cool climate of the area combined with its array of geological history create a place like no other in California for grapes, and it's thanks to producers like Doug that have helped Chardonnay take root in the region. The 2017 vintage of Barden commands your attention with its bright and focused acidity matched with refreshing notes of tangerine, green apple, and crisp pear. Carrying on to a rounded creamy texture with hints of baking spice and crushed chalk. This wine is a beautiful example of the evolution of California Chardonnay, and I am so pleased we are able to offer this wine at such an incredible value for you to experience the magic of Sta. Rita Hills for yourself.
