The 2016 Vrede Pinot Noir comes from shale soils, including around 10% whole bunches, matured for 11 months in 25% first-fill barrel, 25% second-fill and 50% third-fill. It has a perfumed, floral bouquet of cranberry and raspberry preserve scents complemented by pressed rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin; touches of candied orange peel infusing the tart red fruit with a brisk, slightly Pommard-like style. I would just like a little more substance on the finish here. Enjoy this over five or six years.
The Vrede vineyard benefits from cool ocean breezes and soils of Bokkeveld shale—silt and clay mixed with sandstone. This zesty wine has notes of bright red cherries, its lightness complemented by bass notes of allspice and black tea.
