I feel extremely grateful and lucky to have gotten a preview of the Rezpiral Series 5 when visiting Oaxaca back in early March. We were able to ear mark a couple of special batches for the store. These are extremely tiny offerings and none is more exciting than the exceptional Madrecuish from Reina Sanchez. Reina has a reputation for putting out some absolutely spectacular batches, although we've been warned that not all Reina is the same. She's a known broker and buys and sells batches of other peoples juice as well as distills her own. We're after the stuff that she's produced and this Madrecuish is definitely hers. The nose is an absolute explosion of fruity and savory agave character. These plants took and incredible long time to mature (15-20 years), even for Madre and you can sense the incredible complexity that that extra aging has imparted on the spirit. We first get fresh guave, roasted gourd, pineapple, dill, seville orange and a bit of shaved pecorino. ON the palate, the roasted agave is at the front with clear mesquite character followed by a powerful mineral quality. The finish is spicy, almost capsicum, but the green chalky fruit prevents it from feeling overtly hot. A truly special and complete experience. This is definitely La Reina at her best!
