K&L Notes

This wine, like all of the vintage dated Champagne from Louis Roederer, is entirely estate, and is also farmed specifically from plots selected to create rose. It is composed of 67% Pinot Noir from the south facing slopes of 1er cru of Cumieres, which benefits from sitting directly on the banks of the marne. The powerful Pinot Noir is tempered with an infusion of 37% Chardonnay, mostly from north facing plots in the grand cru of Chouilly. In 2014, chef de cave Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon used 17% oak cask fermented lots when creating the blend. All of the Pinot Noir is macerated together with a small amount of Chardonnay juice; a unique method for producing rose. Mr. Lecaillon explained to me that he “acidifies” the ripe Pinot of Cumieres with the north facing Chouily Chardonnay. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

I made homemade blini which I served with smoked salmon, crème fraiche, chopped hard-boiled egg and chives from our herb garden to pair with this bottle. The color of the wine was a beautiful orange tinged pink, and the had generous aromas of cherry and pie crust. In the mouth, this is clearly a long distance runner, sleek but powerful, with great depth of Pinot Noir flavor, but no baby fat. The wine has minerality and drive that would make many blanc de blancs blush, but without austerity or harshness. It is a masterpiece, and while it drinks exceptionally well today, especially with food like we had, it will develop for decades adding complexity and texture.

Another stunner from Roederer, the 2014 rosé is bursting with floral aromatics, red berry fruit with a hint of spring greens, and a dynamic palate that feels both lush and supremely chalky. The bubbles are delicate and the finish is dramatically long, but stays bright. This is a definite food wine, and drinks as luxuriously as you'd expect from the makers of Cristal, while still feeling fresh enough for a sweltering day.

The house of Roederer is about a close as Champagne comes to a house hold name. Yet, it is one of the last great independent and family run champagne houses. Unlike many of their larger, better knows peers, Roederer is able to sustain their production exclusively via estate grown fruit. This ensures that they will source only the best fruit that can be had each year. I've been drinking their wines for longer than I can remember. This vintage Pinot Noir dominant rosé is about as delicious as a wine needs to be. It offers up just the faintest hint of red fruit and roses from your glass. The savory, vinous character on the palate makes this feel almost like drinking a still wine as the bubbles are so finely integrated. I'd strongly encourage you to drink this out of a standard wine glass. It's time to discharge those flutes you might still own. They do you and your wine no favors. As for versatility, you'll be surprised how well this wine will stand up to backyard barbecue. Feel free to serve this wine anytime; you're worth it.

Another outstanding release from one of the last family-run Champagne houses. I must confess that I was wary of a 2014 release, as the vintage showed explosive flowering in the spring followed by a rainy, treacherous summer. But Roederer has once again exceeded expectations and delivered a carefully crafted cuvee that shows the pedigree of their house. Lemon cake and sweet blossoms on the nose segue into a rich palate of strawberries, raspberries and clotted cream. Hazelnut biscotti provides body and balance to the lush fruit and generous acid. Notes of ruby grapefruit and blood orange add further dimension, and savory lees on the finish round out this decadent quaffer. Truly a triumph, and one wine I can't wait to drink again.
