    New Zealand continues to impress with their Pinot Noir production. Year after year, they produce wines of such amazing pedigree it's no wonder they're quickly climbing the ladder in the quality hierarchy! This bottle is lovely and rich on the nose, earthy with notes of dried herb, dark cherry, mushroom, and curing meat. The palate is balanced with dark tea, fresh turned earth, bitter chocolate, cherry, and a rich mid-palate. The spice and floral notes come in on the finish to fill it out. This is a wine that will continue to evolve for years to come, but don't be afraid to open one now, this will turn the heads of those who didn't already love New Zealand wines!

    It's always very exciting to see a new vintage of Ata Rangi arriving to our store! Beautiful wine, full of bright black cherry and lovely spice notes of clove with a touch of smoky black tea on the nose and palate. Fresh and crunchy acidity balances powerful fruit, making this wine shine from start to finish with a delightfully juicy, lingering aftertaste. This wine would be a great match for pork tenderloin.

    As a fan of New Zealand Pinot Noir, it is always a pleasure to try a new vintage of the Ata Rangi. While Central Otago gets most of the recognition for producing the country's best Pinots, Martinborough, an hour's drive from Wellington, is also a source for some outstanding wines. This wine delivers everything you desire in a Pinot Noir. It opens with a very pretty nose, loads of spices such as cloves and nutmeg, and a subtle touch of wood in the background. Flavors of cranberries, strawberries, and wild roses are lifted by the freshness and ample acidity that makes Pinot Noir such a fantastic grape. This all leads to a finish that is long with some fine dusty tannins. Definitely something that could age effortlessly for several years and provide plenty of drinking pleasure now or later. The 2017 Ata Rangi is another classic from this producer that shows just what New Zealand can do, rivaling the best Pinot Noir grown anywhere in the world.

    It is hard to find a great Pinot that achieves the balance between rich, sweet, and utterly drinkable fruit and nuances of earth, spice, and floral elements that keep it interesting enough to just sit around and smell for hours. Somehow, Ata Rangi achieves it in a unique, fantastic fashion. This is New Zealand Pinot Noir at its best, a benchmark for the category.

    Martinborough's finest always hit their mark, and this year's Ata Rangi is classically sophisticated, savory, spicy, and rich. Turned earth and forest floor mixed up in cherry skins and shitake framed by that subtle spice and bite that give away Pinot to anyone who's paying attention. With just a bit of development already, this is eminently drinkable but can hang for another handful of years easily.

    For everyone who spent much of the last year under a state of semi-quarantine, let me share a story involving a "quarantine" with a happy ending. Back in the late 1970s, a customs inspector in New Zealand named Malcom Abel stopped a fellow who'd arrived from France and confiscated several healthy Burgundian Pinot Noir cuttings (apparently taken from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti!) hidden in the man's gumboots. As a modest grower himself, Abel wisely placed them under quarantine instead of destroying them. He then propagated the cuttings, and they later ended up at Ata Rangi as the much-heralded "Abel clone." Fortunately, you do not need to quarantine this bottle, as it already seduces with irresistible fragrances of wild cherry, rhubarb, and pomegranate, unraveling a complex palate of rose petal, black tea, cherry tobacco, and Asian spices. Framed by suave tannins and seamless acidity, this is an incredibly elegant, benchmark Martinborough Pinot that rivals many Burgundian bottles at twice the price.

    Another solid vintage of Pinot from the folks at Ata Rangi. The nose has some wonderful fresh fruit focused on cherry with an under-layer of toasted berries. While the fruit is the star, there's still depth to this wine with forest floor, vine stem, tea aromas, and subtle spices like anise. More ripe cherries drive the palate with bramble berry support and a little green peppercorn note. Great structure meets bright tartness to make a very complete New Zealand Pinot Noir.

    Ata Rangi is one of the most acclaimed Pinot Noir producers in New Zealand today. Nestled in the tiny village of Martinborough, Ata Rangi was one of the earliest pioneers of the region and instrumental in vaulting its reputation as one of the great sites for Pinot Noir across the globe. With winemaker Helen Masters named Best New Zealand winemaker in 2019 and one of only two wineries in the country given Grand Cru status, Ata Rangi's pedigree as the-best-of-the-best Pinot Noir in New Zealand is without question. This is one of the wines that I look most forward to tasting each year, and the 2017 is absolutely phenomenal. The moment the wine hits the glass, its aromas soar. With notes of vine-ripened strawberries and black cherries over wet stone, there is both a purity and a depth that is extraordinary. Elements of bramble, clove, and cedar add to the complexity and accent the powerful fruit. On a first taste, this explodes across the palate with bright red fruits, vibrant acidity, and silky tannin, which all lead to a finish that carries on and on. This is a Pinot Noir you absolutely cannot miss.

    A classic and elegant Pinot Noir. The nose is expressive and layered with seductive floral and red fruit aromas that work together. In the mouth it is balanced and delicious . A great food wine.
