Richer, sweet, spicier and more perfumed than the Dreadnought. This softer and more charming and accessible wine shows the benefit of having been co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier. Raspberry, violets, chocolate, pepper, anise and spicy oak are some of the more obvious flavours in this complex wine.
Inspired by the great Cote-Rotie wines of the Northern Rhone, this has an elegant touch of viognier (3%). Wonderfully perfumed and complex, the bouquet shows blackberry, spiced cherry, violet, dark chocolate and toasted almond characters, leading to a concentrated and beautifully textured palate that is delightfully expressed and irresistibly flavoured. Lush and sophisticated, and offers delectable fruit flavours with sensual mouthfeel and complexity.
Syrah grapes for this beauty (the second vintage after the 2012) come from three volcanic hillside vineyards, co-fermented in the Côte-Rôtie style with 3% Viognier. About 30% of whole-bunch fruit was used, and the blend spent time in French oak barrels, 25% new. There's amazing floral lift and dense, primary red berry fruit perfume which leads to a long, sappy, savoury palate of darker berries, tight tannins and excellent freshness. Complex, concentrated and complete. (TG)
Pale to medium garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Bellerophon Syrah Viognier has a profoundly pepper and spice laced nose over notes of kirsch, raspberry preserves and lavender. Medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with red berry, pepper and baking spice flavors supported by rounded tannins and refreshing acidity, finishing with great length. (LPB)
A handy wine in terms of fragrance and assertiveness. Smells all floral and fruity and tastes punchy and savory. Tannins and acid align nicely.
Dark red. Enticing violet lift to the aromas of blackberry, raspberry, white pepper, dusty herbs and bitter chocolate; just starting to open. Lovely sweetness and sexy oak-spicy lift to the red berry and chocolate flavors. Boasts excellent energy considering its 3.8 pH, thanks to the contribution of the stems. At once creamy and fresh, this very youthful wine finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins and should age well. (ST) 91+
Dark, deep ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly proportioned with deeply fragrant aromas of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit entwined with nutty oak elements unfolding dark-red and violet florals, with spices, game and savoury herb notes emerging with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a tightly bound and elegant core of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit harmoniously entwined with dark-red and violet florals. The fruit is supported by moderately extracted, fine-grained, flowery tannins with integrated acidity lending liveliness and drive. The mouthfeel has good energy and linearity, and the wine flows smoothly to an elegant, lingering finish of dark-red fruits, florals, spices and funky herb detail. This is an elegant, aromatic, fine-grained and smooth Syrah/Viognier blend with dark raspberry, floral and spicy flavours. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 6-8 years. A blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier from 3 sites, co-fermented by indigenous yeasts with approx. 30% whole bunches of both varieties to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 25% new French oak. 18.0+/20
