The teaspooned malt that started it all for us! We've had excellent luck finding these old casks of Balvenie. The unbelievable value that this malt whisky offers is unparalleled nearly anywhere else in the Scotch world. It's production is quite different from all the other teaspooned blends we're offering this year because it never existed as a single malt. Instead, the malt spirit coming from the Balvenie Distillery is immediately "adjusted" with a tiny (perhaps mythological, we've never gotten a straight answer on this) there by changing the product administratively into blended malt. This can then be aged and used for William Grants blends or traded among industry partners without fear that these barrels will include the name of the source. And while, like many of the Scotch Whisky Association rules, our bottler is not able to label this whisky (or any other blended malt) with the source distillery, we have no such prohibition in explaining to our clientele the source of this special whisky. This incredible old malt has been naturally reduced through decades of aging in a wet warehouse to the very approachable 86 proof. The low proof might turn off a few of the most stringent purists, until they realize that achieving this lower proof through natural aging does very different things to a whisky than via the addition of water. This cask only yielded 153 bottles and its unbelievable complexity offers the quintessential mature malt experience at a fraction of typical price.
