Traces of cacao powder and cinnamon lend spice to dried strawberry and blueberry on the nose of this richly textured blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Terret Noir and Muscardin. It’s an opulent but fresh-fruited wine accented by a crisp mineral lift on the midpalate. Soft, smooth tannins accompany a long finish. Drinks well in youth but should maintain through 2030. (AI)
Moving to the reds, the deeply colored 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a rocking bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, spring flowers, and ground pepper. It shows some more meatiness and spice on the palate, has medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Give it 2-3 years. 92+
Deep shimmering ruby. Powerful, spice-accented dark berries, cherry-vanilla and licorice on the deeply perfumed nose. Warm blackberry, bitter cherry and mocha flavors are sharpened by a suggestion of peppery spices. Lingers with good intensity and a repeating vanilla note on the plush finish, which is given shape by velvety tannins. (JR)
We are pleased to welcome the wines of Chateau de la Gardine to our direct import portfolio. The Brunel family's roots in wine date back to the 17th century. Gaston Brunel acquired Chateau de la Gardine in 1945 and quickly made the estate one of the benchmark producers in the region. Tradition reigns at the estate and is encompassed by the signature Gardine bottle shape which is modeled after a hand-blown bottle found on the estate by Gaston. He loved the look so much that all their wines have been bottled in its replicas since 1964. The estate is now run by Gaston's sons Patrick and Maxime along with their children, Marie-Odile and Philippe. Using organic and sustainable practices, they farm about 50 hectares in Chateauneuf. The grapes are planted over a mix of sandy-clay, galets (rolled stones) and limestone. Average vine age ranges between 40-60 years. The traditional cuvee is composed of 60% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 5% Muscardin and Gardine is one of the few remaining estates that blends their grapes before fermentation. Grapes are destemmed in most vintages and the wine is aged in a mix of large vats and use 225L barrels. As with all Gardine wines, the wine shows its classic nature in its youth and has the stuffing to age for a decade or more.
