50 by 50 is the long-time passion project of Gerald Casale, known to fans of the "new wave" music genre as the bassist for Devo. Far from being a whimsical endeavor by a musician with spare time (and money) on his hands, 50 by 50 is Casale's outlet for a serious wine bug that reached its full explosion in 1990 with his introduction to the one and only Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Ever since, Pinot Noir has been his unyielding addiction. Many years in the making, the winery sources fruit from the outstanding Rodger's Creek vineyard. Winery Notes: "The fruit was grown at Rodger’s Creek, in the Sonoma Coast AVA, helmed by Randy Luginbill and Jonathan Gold, veterans with 30 years of experience. Rodger’s Creek vineyards are 15 years old and were formerly pasture land. The soils are a Kidd stony loam and our grapes came from vines on an approximately 9 percent slope at an elevation of 675 feet."

I am a Pinot fan, it's true. But this also means that I am picky about Pinot. I like it to have the perfect balance of vibrant fruit, savory undertones, super fine-grained tannin, and the ideal amount of acidity. I taste a lot of Pinot, but it's rare that I find a new favorite. Well, this wine has it all. I'm a huge fan!
