Stéphane Vivier crafted a beautiful 2017 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard. 'We've changed from using fruit from the top of the hill, next to Kosta Browne, to using fruit at the bottom of the hill, where it's more foggy,' Vivier says. "It ripens more slowly. I see a lot of positives to working with grapes at that lower elevation." It has singular, nuanced aromas of dried red cherries and cranberries, cardamom, fragrant earth, black tea leaves and floral potpourri, continuing to blossom with time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is incredibly silky and concentrated, with spicy, floral character, finely grained and fresh with a long finish. It's immediately approachable but will benefit from another two to three years in bottle. This was made with about 5% to 8% new oak. (EB)
