K&L Notes

An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a U.C. Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. Over the years, Château de Montfaucon has developed a HUGE following among both our staff and customers. Who is the Baron Louis? A seminal figure in the history of Montfaucon, he was responsible for restoring the château on the estate, saving it from complete ruin at the close of the 19th century.

This is big and bold and an amazingly good bottle for the money. Spiced cherries, ripe raspberries, pepper, earth and lavender are crammed into the juicy mid-palate which takes on a dark chocolate edge as the wine gets air. As juicy and mouth filling as the flavors are the finish of fine grained tannins is superbly dry and begs for rustic fare. A baby Chateauneuf du Pape for sure.

After tasting the Baron Louis for over a decade, there are few vintages that I have as eagerly anticipated as the 2016. Let me back up for a second... Montfaucon is one of our oldest and greatest relationships in the southern Rhone. A young(er) Rudi des Pins met K&L founder and main wine buyer Clyde Beffa shortly after he had taken control of his family estate and began selling the wine directly. As one of his first customers, we have watched his winemaking prowess grow and evolve for these past 25 years. Now, my history with the estate doesn't go back quite that far but I have tasted almost all of the wines since the 2005 vintage and the "Baron" always ranks as one of my favorite wines of any vintage. Late released, as per usual, the wine is given a couple of years in cellar after bottling to allow the wine to fully integrate. Their have been many exceptional Barons over the years, 2005, 2007, 2009 (which the winery released a few bottles to us from their library), 2010, 2015 and now 2016. These are wines that are reflective of Lirac. A panoply of red fruit, spices and wild herbs emanate from the wine and invite you in. This is by far the most supple and inviting young Baron I have yet experienced. This is a keeper for many years but if you run out, don't worry, the winery may release a little more in a decade but with a little holding price tacked on for good measure. Better yet, stock up now, you won't regret it.
