K&L Notes

Derek Mossman began Garage Wine Company at a time when there were relatively few smaller, family-owned wineries in Chile. He not only started his venture to produce handmade wines on a human scale, but also to buy great quality fruit, supporting farmers throughout the country. Along the way, he also banded together a group of like-minded wineries to create MOVI (The Independent Winemakers Movement), a platform to promote smaller production wineries in Chile. Vigno is one of Garage's most special offerings, a single vineyard wine that celebrates old vine, dry farmed Carignane. It is a fantastic red, and one of southern Chile's iconic wines for sure.

Structurally this is sleek and concentrated with a coiled tension from the acidity that seems almost trapped in the middle. There are aromas of loam, forest floor, creosote and flowers along with crunchy sour cherry fruit which ends with a tug of iron tinged mineral talc. This big and deep wine is fresh and has a long life ahead of it so decant now or cellar for years.

The aromatics on this wine are crazy intense. Standing two feet away from the glass, wearing my three-layered mask, my mouth starting watering, crazy. The first thing I thought of was Chilean Priorat?! The aromatics are ridiculous; floral, mountain herbs(that is the big Chile note for me), deep cherry notes, forest floor, licorice and other fine spices, a savory umami note, a dusty mineral tang. The nose is deep and very expressive. It is that floral, mineral fruit combination that draws the comparison to Priorat for me. It is so much fun to smell. Then all that intensity is there on the palate too. The fruit is mixed cherries; bright and dark, sweet and tart. Behind that is a subdued expression of the wild Chilean wild mountain herbs, and black tea spice. This has a great finish that goes and goes. It is all smashed berries, spice, potpourri, and minerals. This is a red meat kind of wine, the redder and the meatier the better. Drink it the night that you get it or hold onto for a while, this is a wine that rewards your self-control or lack thereof.

Here we are again with another delicious, and frankly just plain cool bottle of wine from Chile! Vigno is Garage Wine's single vineyard wines, and in a time where true field blends are less and less common in new world production it makes this that much more important! The nose is bright, a little funky, with bright raspberry and tart cherry and a hint of violet with decaying earth to help it darken up a bit. the palate is bright with those cherry notes really presenting themselves. It relaxes after that and focuses in on those earth notes. Spent tea, decaying violet, potpourri, and damp earth make this a delicious and really unique wine that any fan of something off the beaten path that is delicious needs to try!
