K&L Notes

After visiting the great wine regions of the world and working with top oenologists, vigneron Robert Eden came across the humble village of La Liviniere in Minervois. There he found his passion had taken root at Chateau Maris and he relocated there in 1997. Always with the intent of working with the environment, he began converting Maris to Organic and Biodyanmic practices. They were officially certified organic in 2002 and Demeter Biodynamic in 2008. With his business partner Kevin Parker, an advocate in the fight against climate change, they have pushed beyond the bounds of sustainable practices and created a winery that is carbon negative. The winery is energy self-sufficient and the buildings are composed of hemp blocks which are biodegradable. All that aside, they have an incredible piece of terroir in La Liviniere which was the first Cru appellation recognized in Languedoc. The vines reside in the foothills of the Black Mountains and the alluvial soils are a mix of schist, sandstone, quartz and limestone. This makes for a varied terroir that allows each grape to best express itself. Winemaking uses all indigenous yeasts and concrete tanks are used for fermentation. La Touge is Maris's introduction to the terroir and style of Minervois. Composed of Syrah, Grenache and a little Carignan, it is a savory and supple wine filled with brambly red and black fruit that evokes the rolling hills and scrubby forests of the region.

Minervois is one of the most exciting Languedoc appellations. Recognized early on for its distinctive soils, topography and local flora, it is easy to see why it was one of the first appellations awarded in the region. The Montagne Noir looming in the background, the chaparral forests surrounding the vineyards and the warmth of the sun are ever present when you visit. It has an air about it that makes it a special place for vine cultivation. Winemaker Robert Eden fell in love when he visited and set up shop in the Cru of la Liviniere, the first Cru awarded in Languedoc. Taking a wholistic approach, working biodynamically from the beginning (and receiving Demeter certification), and working to make the property carbon negative, Maris is not just an eco-destination, its a philosophy come to life. These practices are what Robert feels with allow the vines to best express themselves and allow the land to provide for a future beyond his stewardship. La Touge is a classic expression of Minervois with spicy, lusty Syrah flavors leading the charge across the palate. The ripeness and tobacco flavors come from the Grenache. When I first tasted a bottle, I said Wow! that's Minervois. Many wines from the region lean toward hedonism - its easy with the warm days and nights. But this has lift and balance that frame the succulent fruit. With it savory red and black fruit on the palate, this begs for grilled lamb or ribeye steaks. Straightforward preparations for complex wines. La Touge is a testament to the practices of letting the land speak through the vines and letting the grapes express the land.
