The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean 1er Cru possesses an intense bouquet: quince and marmalade aromas infuse the vibrant, penetrating citrus fruit, and crushed pebbles and chalky aromas emerge with time. The palate conveys palpable energy. A vibrant Chassagne-Montrachet with fabulous acidity and a razor-sharp, brilliantly defined finish that frankly flirts with Grand Cru quality. Stunning. (NM)

A more reticent nose timidly offers up note of resin, rosemary oil, grapefruit and poached pear. The medium-bodied flavors offer a step up in intensity and mid-palate density while exhibiting just a bit better depth and persistence on the lingering finish. This has an interesting texture that is almost oily yet there is very good energy.

The 2018 Clos St. Jean from Domaine Moreau is very elegant this year, exemplifying the goal of the Moreau brothers to really keep this element front and center in their 2018s. The nose jumps from the glass in a youthful blend of white peach, pear, a complex base of soil, bee pollen, white flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full and very refined in personality, with a good core, fine transparency and grip, bright, zesty acids and a long, classy and very nicely balanced finish. The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean is very charming this year, revealing aromas of peach, ripe lemons, white flowers, fresh mint and almond paste. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and round, with a lively spine of underlying acidity and a chalky finish. This will be the most approachable young of Moreau's premiers crus.
