Don’t think about this wine. Buy this wine. Winemaker of the Year Greg Brewer knows what he is doing, and his expression of the Santa Barbara terroir is forged through his own experience. 3D is a flat and sandy vineyard which has rows oriented to make the most of the unique transverse hills that frame the Santa Rita Hills AVA. During the very long growing season the marine layer wraps the early morning sun in a thick cloak of clouds until late morning when the sun bursts through to warm the fruit. In the late afternoon, that marine layer charges back in and cools the grapes, adding complexity. This wine gets its strength and character entirely from the land as Brewer Clifton hasn’t bought a new barrel in over twenty years, choosing instead to use 100% whole cluster to add body and structure. Juicy and bright with acid, the various citrus fruit aromas and waxy flowers swirl into your subconscious, tempting you not to wait to demolish the case you bought. Patience will reward you ultimately, but not if your idea of patience is waiting to find out how much of this wine will be left after the scramble.

2018 is a brilliant year for this wine. And that's saying something for a wine that year in year out is amongst the finest Chardonnays in California. Greg Brewer is the master of this style and has made it his signature—precise balance of richness and restraint, beautiful ripe fruit, and racy coastal acidity. The wine comes from a prime parcel on the estate, planted in very sandy soils to a mix of clones (Wente, Mount Eden, 4, 76) that give layered depth and complexity. The sandy soil imparts a shimmering, crystalline quality, and the stiff sea breezes of the Sta. Rita Hills gives an electrifying jolt of acidity to close. The use of only neutral barrels means that none of this wonderful purity and detail is masked by oak flavors. It's a beautiful bottle of Chardonnay from a winemaker that has the utmost respect for the varietal and wants to showcase its true nature without any makeup. It appears that the long, near-perfect growing season of 2018 was perfect for Greg's style, as this is an absolute beauty.
