The balsamic and ripe fruit character is very impressive with a dense and silky texture that shows so much generosity at this age. Full and gorgeous. Chewy and savory. Holding on beautifully.
Good full red. More laid-back, fresher aromas of plum, cherry, hot stones and smoke. Sweet and opulent, but more sharply delineated than the '89, with excellent concentration and grip. Firm, harmonious acidity. Longer on the finish than the '89, with considerable ripe, dusty, even tannins. Delicious already but should age slowly. The Mugas consider this the best vintage for Prado Enea since '81. (ST)
The 1991 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is starting to really drink at its peak at age twenty-seven, but still has decades of positive evolution in front of it. The complex nose wafts from the glass in a fine blend of black cherries, roasted game, fresh bay, a fine base of soil, coffee and a fine topnote of Rioja spice tones. On the palate the wine is full, velvety and gently robust, with an excellent core of fruit, still a moderate level of backend tannin, tangy acids and very good grip on the long, complex and vibrant finish. The last time I drank a bottle of this was back in 2009 and the wine had not yet blossomed, but it is singing today and it is quite clear that I underrated it back in 2009! This is a superb vintage of Prado Enea that may one day approach the brilliance of the 1981 version, which remains the finest vintage of this iconic bottling as I have ever had the pleasure to taste. Drink between 2018-2040.
The 1991 Prado Enea Grand Reserva has a very elegant bouquet of lifted red currant, wild strawberry, mint and leather that is very well-defined and youthful. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, firm tannins and a complex array of flavors: licorice, sage, leather and mulberry fruit. It has very good weight although it has another 15 to 20 years upon its drinking plateau. (NM)
Complex and possessed of great finesse, this handsome Gran Reserva displays a beautiful bouquet, with dried-cherry, fig, caramel and game notes. It is large-scaled, with lots of fruit, oak and tannins. There are many elements here, and they need time to resolve. Patience will be rewarded.
