It is often said that the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons of 1974 experienced an early and not very pretty fall from grace, and we have not only agreed with the idea but have championed the notion that 1973 was the longer aging vintage of the two despite receiving far less attention. Yet, here, in one of our highest rated wines is greatness by any measure. At 35 years old, this wine is surprisingly and rewardingly rich with intriguing notes of caramel and nicely developed black cherry fruit still sufficiently in evidence to be wonderfully enjoyable.
The outstanding 1993 Cask 23 Proprietary Red Wine exhibits a dark ruby/garnet color, sweet, coffee, chocolate, cherry-like aromas, medium to full body, an alluring sweetness on the attack, but dry tannin in the finish. This effort possesses more expansiveness and richness, but the wine is well-below the profound Cask 23's made in 1992, 1991, 1990, 1985, 1978, and 1974. (RP)
