A participant in the famed "Judgement of Paris" tasting of 1976, Clos du Val wines are crafted by Bernard Portet, who was profiled thus by the Wine Spectator: "The son of a cellarmaster at Lafite Rothschild, Portet came to Napa in 1972, determined to show America how to make classy, age-worthy wines. His Clos Du Val Cabernets, opened after a decade and more of bottle age, remain elegant and interesting - New World corollaries to the wines of the Médoc....chosen to compete in a seminal tasting pitting France against California, held in Paris in 1976. Clos Du Val didn't win, but its inclusion in that selective tasting may have been the winery's finest moment." (07/2002)
