The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is one of the finest regular Cabernet Sauvignons Mondavi has produced. A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Syrah (13.9% alcohol), this dark ruby-colored wine with purple nuances has sweet black currant flavors mixed with spice box, licorice, and toast notes. Fleshy and open-knit, it should drink well for 10-14 years.
Ruby-red. Spicy aromas of cassis, graphite, mint and tobacco, along with a floral topnote. Juicy, intensely flavored and penetrating. Lovely stylish wine, with moderate flesh over a firm spine. The fruit really carries on the long, ripely tannic finish.
At the bottom end of our range, this stalwart is tightly wound and fairly driven. Plum and cassis on the palate offer just the slightest nuance of cured Italian meat. Coffee is dominant on the long, linear finish. Now it’s pretty dark and unevolved. Patience will be rewarded.
Graceful and harmonious, well proportioned, with supple, loamy currant, sage and a hint of lead pencil. Finishes with a long, deep aftertaste. (2008)
