It must be a sign of the difficult times that the Louis Martini winery is selling Zinfandel grapes from their renowned Monte Rosso vineyard, but it is a bonus for consumers. Ravenswood's 1993 Zinfandel Monte Rosso is a knock-out example of what this vineyard can produce. The wine exhibits an opaque purple color, sweet, mineral and black fruit aromas, and adequate acidity. It is a rich, classically structured, powerful, authoritatively-flavored wine with layers of fruit, and a moderately tannic, spicy finish. Although delicious, it only hints at what will emerge with 12-18 additional months of cellaring. This silky, structured, well-focused Zinfandel will have many admirers.
