Smooth, supple, elegant and graceful, with rich, concentrated currant, anise and blackberry fruit that's beautifully defined. Plenty of acidity and firm, earthy tannins give it balance. Long, lingering aftertaste. (JL)
f we have a quibble with this wine, and it is a minor quibble at that, it is in its slight lack of compelling energy. The vintage overall was not very special, but this wine's early showing was quite good. Now it has acquired some aged cedar and pine notes and is giving up its fruit a bit on the early side. It will hold for another five years and maybe more but it has dropped back a tad in overall desirability. Two stars when first reviewed.
The wine is a more monolithic style of Spottswoode, with a dark garnet/plum color, notes of subtle smoke, earth, underbrush, blackcurrants and plum. It had medium body, but lacks the complexity, nuance and overall fragrance of the top years. (RP)
