Supple, rich yet understated style, with complex herb- and currant-laced flavors that gain momentum and nuance. Offers hints of pencil lead, coffee, dried fruit and spice. Long finish. (JL, Web Only-2002)
I found Shafer's 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District to be an elegant, polished, richly fruity wine similar to a fine Margaux, with riper fruit and more body and weight. I tend to develop more appreciation and fondness for Shafer's Cabernet Sauvignons after about ten years of aging. I share this with readers as I have underrated Shafer's wines in the past, and I am not sure I haven't done that once again. Certainly this is a glowing review, but the stylish, understated, elegant, finesse style of Cabernet Sauvignons that emerge from Shafer appear to put on weight and develop more complexity with age.
