The 1991 Zinfandel-Lytton Springs (80% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, 6% Grenache, 2% Carignan) has over 14% alcohol, but its super-concentration of fruit covers any alcoholic heat. The deep ruby/purple color is followed by gobs of jammy blackcurrant and black-raspberry fruit. This big, heady, spicy, chewy, fleshy wine is soft and succulent, with a velvety finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
Impressive for its distinctive Zinfandel flavors, balance, suppleness and grace. The core of plum, raspberry, black cherry and spice is complex, with hints of coffee, cocoa and cedar. Long and delicious on the aftertaste. Zinfandel with 12 percent Petite Sirah, 5 percent Grenache and 3 percent Carignane.--Zinfandel retrospective.
