Deep garnet; fragrant tar and black truffle nose; extremely concentrated; big and mouth-filling, with very dense cassis flavor; enormous, generous fruit; a voluptuous claret.
Bright red with an amber rim. Captivating nose of dark plum, blackcurrant, oak, coffee, cocoa and flowers. Juicy, sweet and suave on entry, then brightly focused in its red fruit and black flavors complicated by cedar and citrus. Finishes with flinty, saline nuances and very suave tannins. This outstanding wine is perfectly balanced and light on its feet, still very young and capable of a very long life. It might disappoint those looking for a blockbuster, but I love its overall sense of refinement. An essence of claret. (ID)
I have had some really lovely bottles of 1970 Mouton, as well as some rather thin and fatiguing bottles in the last several years. The wine has a reputation for inconsistency, but when one hits a good bottle (as this was), it really is a lovely example of the vintage. The bouquet is deep, complex and sweet, as it offers up a fine mélange of pure black cherries, a note of boysenberry, black truffles, a bit of Mouton spice, earth and cigar box. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, plump and succulent, with good mid-palate depth, lovely vibrancy, and excellent length and grip on the complex and sumptuous finish. There is not quite the same structural integrity here as is evidenced in the greatest wines of the vintage (such as the Palmer with which this was paired), but when its right, the 1970 Mouton is really a delicious bottle of wine. (Drink between 2006-2020)
Tasted at the “First Growth” lunch in London. A consistently fine Mouton that here, out-classes its rival Lafite (and to think, this was still a Deuxieme Cru!) The nose has evolved great complexity with aromas of cedar, wild mint, pencil box that build nicely in the glass and returning later it has conjured up a lovely coffee bean scent. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced yet foursquare with notes of cedar, dried herbs, leather and a hint of damson here. Silky smooth texture towards the finish and great persistency for the vintage. Very classic, very Mouton. Excellent. (NM)
