Served by Jean Gautreau at the chateau, the 1989 Sociando-Mallet has those telltale signs of bell pepper and earth on the nose, the fruit in the background at first but developing with aeration, offering blackberry leaf and a touch of Doris plum. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm, rigid tannins and it does not really mellow in the glass, but sits up with a straight back. Masculine but with ample fruit, very fresh and crisp towards the finish. I do not think this will get any better and one could argue that it lacks a little weight, but it is a lovely Sociando. Drink now-2020. (NM)
Fresh and delicious. Dark-ruby color, and a lovely fresh berry, raspberry and floral nose. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a medium, fruity aftertaste. Give it a bit more time. (JS)
